Dear Student:

This file is for anyone interested in:

·       Internships (Australia or Overseas)

·       Study exchange overseas while at undergraduate level.

·       Volunteer work overseas  (during holidays or after graduation)

However,  here is the tough stuff up front:

Working overseas is usually not a simple: apply -> get job -> go

kind of system as you might find for local jobs.

Nor is it as simple as enrolling in a course and ‘off you go’ (it may be, if you are lucky but usually it’s not).

Any overseas posting requires a bit of your own ‘legwork’, running around, talking to people, flexibility and dedication

Therefore it has its own inbuilt dedication selection mechanism.  If you are really interested you will find something.  It is for those wanting to try something a little more adventurous.

Below, are various leads and contacts in random order: provided ‘as is’ - without implicit recommendations, no guarantees of any sort. You are responsible for YOUR life and the decisions are all yours.

If you want to chat and discuss any of the leads, or talk about working overseas, I’m happy to do so, under the condition that you have first

1)     read this document and followed up some of the leads properly

2)     carried out your OWN research, in other words: you have done some homework and don’t come to me as a short cut.

Provided you meet the above two condition, I’m really am very happy to talk to you. J

Heiko

Our two major projects since have been the creation of the Uluru Health Care Centre (UHCC) and the Uluru Children's Home (UCH) both located in Kadapakkam, a small fishing village south of Mahabalipuram, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. We have also established community development programs concentrating on health, the environment and education in this region.

TEWFI operates solely on private donations. We have offices in India, Australia and the USA.

There are also many many other organisations such as :

AESOP business volunteers (used to be for retired people, now for all ages)

AVI  formerly known as: OSB

etc… that send volunteers.

And an American outfit: Geekcorps:

http://www.geekcorps.org/

And of course : you can always just approach an organisation that does work overseas by yourself and offer your services. Pick someone who does work you find interesting and talk to them !

You can ask Heiko, AFTER reading the above and doing some homework. We currently need IT and Computer people in SE Asia

Good luck

Heiko

And there is the ubiquitous GOOGLE

Dear Heiko

Thank you for expressing interest in Google opportunities for students at RMIT and considering referring students.
My apologies for the delay in replying.

This year there are 4 type of opportunities for RMIT students:

  • Internships
  • Anita Borg Scholarships for female software engineers
  • Graduate positions
  • Additionally, students can also apply for Google' Summer of Code programs

As a quick overview:

  • Students can now find full details for each, selection hints and submit applications online at Google Australia's new ANZ student website www.google.com.au/jobs/students.
  • Relocation assistance is given to students.
  • Internship and graduate software engineering roles are based at our Sydney Engineering Centre. Students can also apply for roles offshore.
  • Google takes on an equal number of students with Bachelors, Masters and Ph.Ds. Undergraduates and postgraduates are encouraged to apply for all opportunities.

A quick summary is given below.

Position                                   Eligibility                                          Closing date
Internships                                > 12 months to graduation                   August
Female Scholarship                   > 12 months, female students             August
New Graduates                         +/- <12 months from graduation.           Thursday April 19th
Google Summer of Code            Any student.                                       14-24th March.

Graduate positions
Graduate positions are open year round.
To be considered for oncampus interviews in May, students need to apply by Friday 6th April.

Internships
Internships will eventually run year round but for now are available to students from December-February for 3 months full-time work.
We will however consider any particularly talented (postgrad) students you recommend outside of this timeframe.
Interns get to do the exact work our normal engineers do. Our most recent interns for instance worked on:
image analysis, search quality, data visualization and network engineering.

Female Software Engineering Scholarships
The 2007 Google Anita Borg Scholarship is aimed at encouraging and supporting females studying computer science (or closely related fields).
Female students need to have studied more than one year at an undergraduate level and have more than 12 months study remaining, whether as an undergraduate or postgraduate.

Google's Summer of Code
From March 14 th-24th students can apply to work on open source projects (and get paid for doing so) in the middle of this year. T
he program encourages students to write code for open source projects by providing them with financial stipends and matching them with several open source groups around the world.  Students can work from home and overseas.

Type of candidates sought

Engineers who love to problem solve, who can work well in small teams and unstructured environments, whether they're half way through a Bachelors degree or even a Ph.D!

Application advice

Lastly, further information on what we look for & and how students can prepare their application and for any interviews can be found at www.google.com.au/jobs/students

FYI, I've been in contact with Daniele Noel (Academic Programs Administrator) and we hope many RMIT students will be successful this year.

I can forward some generic job descriptions if helpful should you wish to add these to the school website.
I tried calling earlier today but could only find a fax number. Do you have a landline I can contact you on to discuss collaboration opportunities?

Otherwise please feel free to contact me at your convenience.

Many thanks,

Will
